Hi everyone,

Since the launch of Guild Wars in 2005 we’ve stayed locked into our original minimum system requirements. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where this is preventing us from deploying important features. After serious consideration, we’ve decided that Guild Wars will no longer be supported on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, and Windows ME beginning June 14, 2012. In order to continue to play Guild Wars after this date, we recommend upgrading to a more recent version of Windows.

Realistically, we do not expect this to impact the vast majority of Guild Wars players. Our logs indicate that fewer than 0.05% of our active players use one of these versions of Windows. Discontinuing support for older versions of Windows allows us to deploy features that will improve account management and security.

We will be updating the System Requirements on our websites, but we wanted to provide an advance notice to you so that you can prepare for the change. If you have any questions, please let us know here.

Thanks.

Follow-up on my first post: this thread is not to discuss the announcement, but for people that may be affected by the announcements to ask us questions. Thanks to stay on topic! ^^

These systems never were part of the supported operating systems listed in our PC System Requirements. You’ll have to follow up with whomever created Wine about this.

I’d adventure a guess that if they were supported in the past. They probably still are supported, but these are good questions.

Windows 2000 is still on our list of Operating Systems for the Minimum PC System Requirements, but no longer on the Recommended PC System Requirements. This means that the game should still run but we encourage you to upgrade.

Same question but for windows server 2003/2008 and XPembedded (WES)

These 2 Operating Systems were never in our list of supported Operating Systems, so there’s no change here.

Are you able to expand on the new security system you have planned that necessitates the ceasing of the older OS’s?
Cheers,

Chris.

I think the concise description would be:
Non-NT kernels are no longer supported.

I will test this soon on one of my embedded pcs.

Today is 17 June, so old Windows systems are not supported anymore. This is good. The bad is, we also need some positive news. I mean the promise that dropping the old OSes would allow to improve the security of client and add some other features. Obviously, this may only be implemented with the update of client, and we are waiting for this update already 3 days… I highly (desperately?) hope that such delay is due to the testing process and attempt to improve the security as possible. Maybe you also bear in mind the number of recent hacks of accounts participated in GW2 Beta weekends, and want to address this issue as well.

Although it’s an offtopic here, could you also implement the separation of login/password for linked Guild Wars and GW2 accounts, an obvious breach in account security?
